Checking Lettuce (Video)

Written by Cook Kosher on Thursday, 21 July 2011. Posted in Tips And Tricks

Checking lettuce isn't a simple as you think. Over the holiday of Pesach my family argued on the best way to clean and check lettuce. My sister insisted that the lettuce get washing with soapy water while some of my other siblings claimed they never heard about it and they will not eat lettuce washed with soap.

A couple of months have passed. Browsing through the CRC website, I came across this video. And the verdict is - My sister was right.

In a dissucssion with Chef Jeffery Nathan, we discussed the idea of washing fruit or vegetables in soapy water and he strongly dissagreed. He encourages using a vegetable wash such as Enviro Clean. Chef Nathan says he washes all his fruit and vegetable. From lettuce to nectarines. As long as we're eating the peel, it should get washed.

This was an excellent and important video to see. Learned a lot! Do you have to do this with romaine leaves that have a kosher certificate- like it was prewashed or prechecked etc..?

They sell such a vegetable wash in Israel called "Sterily". It works really well and it says on the package that its meant for all fruit and vegetables especially lettuce and cabbage. Thank you for the important update.
